Edinburgh Newborn Baby Photo Sessions
Your burning questions answered right here
This will be an extended description of various topics I get asked regarding newborn photo sessions. My main speciality is newborn baby photo sessions. I have done this now for approximately 5 years and have learned so much about babies and their behaviours. You can read more here about how I started and the story of my very first newborn session. I was definitely shaking through that first one!
“Armands was absolutely fantastic with our son handling him with care and ease throughout the session. We included our little shih tzu into some shots and cannot believe the end results – simply beautiful! We knew from the work displayed on the walls of the studio that the outcome would be some lovely shots but we saw them last night and they were all truly breathtaking! Cannot recommend enough, if you are looking for a family photographer then look no further! Five star and more!” Nicola, Edinburgh
Parents pretty much always have the same standard questions. In this topic I will cover few basic ones.
What is newborn photo session?
In our studio we consider a newborn session to be with baby aged anywhere from birth to 5 weeks. From 6 weeks onwards, we call it baby sessions. Generally you should aim to schedule your newborn’s photography session at around the 10 day mark. Sometimes newborn sessions will take place at around 4 week mark, but then little one will most likely be awake and a lot harder to get nicely posed for their newborn photos.
What is custom newborn photography?
I get asked this question quite a lot. You always have a choice where to get your baby photos done. You can get newborn photos done at the hospital by a hospital photographer, where you have the choice of various studios including Mothercare.
So what is the difference between my custom newborn photography, hospital photos, and traditional high street photography studio? First of all, consider the length of the session itself, more attention to detail, and a higher degree of expertise and experience with the posing of newborn. Specialised newborn photographers are trained to pose newborn babies.
Hospital photos are nice in a way, in that your baby is really brand new, just couple days new. Emotions are often running high at this time, and some parents simply agree to get some photos done at the hospital. And there is nothing wrong with nice hospital photos. The question is whether you want to invest in photos within the hospital hospital environment, or just take few snaps yourselves.
Your newborn baby photo sessions with A-Fotografy last anywhere from 2 hours or so. Props and choices of set ups are another big bonus point. There is a lot more care and creativity for beautiful newborn baby photo sessions. This topic could be expanded for whole separate section itself, but once you look at my newborn photography website, it should give you a good idea of the difference. Don’t forget to watch the newborn video as well. That shows how the sessions normally go.
Availability and when to book
Newborn session should be booked as soon as you can, particularly since I can sometimes get booked up as far as 2 months in advance. I normally photograph only 3 newborn sessions per week, interweaving these with my other types of photography. I will do only one newborn session per day as heat and attention to detail level can wear out parents, the newborn baby (and me!) very quickly. It is a hard (but incredibly satisfying) work. Occasionally I might have availability for last minute, but don’t bet on that. Once you have made a booking I would pencil you in my books and invite you to the studio for a chat. After that we would simply just wait until baby is here.
When is the best time to photograph newborn?
This is a very tricky topic, as in the past 5 years I have seen it all. Older newborns sleep like charm, whereas 5 day new-to-this-world newborns are awake throughout their sessions. I can definitely say that somewhere between 5-14 days is good range. Normally I meet my models sometime around 10-12 days age. The crucial part of this is to give me a call on the same day that baby arrives so I can book you in a week after.
I know these are just few questions you may have on your mind, and there are probably lots more. That is why I made a special newborn photography guide page on my website.
